The Mead The Vikings Stole

A Braggot is a mead (honey wine) made with a beer recipe. They were popular in northern Scotland during the time of the Picts (800 to 1200 AD). Whether they bought it or more likely stole it, the Vikings drank it.

Here is my braggot recipe for 5 gallons:

4lbs Light Amber Honey
1 lbs Weyermann Carafoam Malt (for body and head)
1 lbs Weyermann Beechwood Smoked Malt
1 lbs Belgian Special B Malt
1 orange (zest & juice)
1 lemon (zest & juice)
1 cup of sour cherries
2 oz US Northern Brewer Hop Pellets (Boil 60 minutes)
2 oz Czech Saaz Hop Pellets (1 oz add to boil at 15 minutes, 1 oz add to secondary fermenter)

Wyeast 2124 Bohemian Lager Yeast
