I may just look for a distro with a functional winff/ffmpeg. Kubuntu seems to restricted and foreign.

I just installed a new ffmpeg on Ubuntu. I expect the method is the same for Kubuntu.
I followed the instructions here:-

Afterwards get WinFF using the ppa.
