I've noticed that the ffmpeg version used with Winff v.42 is still the one issued on May 13, 2007.   I can't tell the version number unless I go to the ffmpeg download site.   For some reason, the version number isn't located in the properties menu.

If I upgrade to the most recent build, will I have problems?

Here v 14277 is the most recent:

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=205275

while 14265 is the most recent on the mirror site:

http://ffdshow.faireal.net/mirror/ffmpeg/

Is the release contained in the Winff.exe the latest stable release?

the version included in the windows installer is 9017. It is a very very stable version.

if you use a newer version you will have to change the names of the codecs in some presets. Like for example mp3 becomes libmp3lame and h264 becomes libx264

another reason to *not* use the latest version of ffmpeg.exe is that it can't do the 3gp conversion. Well, at least all my efforts failed. I reverted to the ffmpeg.exe version supplied with winff and 3gp's could once more be converted [I get students to bring in their video taken on their mob. phones]

I just downloaded and installed WinFF and tried to convert .3gp files but no luck, whichever format I choose for the output doesn't work, here are the messages:

Code:

Hey Matt,

Are you able to elaborate any more on the legal reasons they removed the codec? I couldn't find much in the FFMPEG forums.

Should I not use an older ffmpeg version that still has the amr codec  on a live site?

Also not really sure what you meant by using the 3g2 format, as I'm getting the same audio codec error in the newer versions as I get when I try to go 3GP to MP4.

Much obliged.

Perhaps not relevant here, as ffmpeg from svn. Hadn't built x264 and ffmpeg for about 5 weeks, noticed in this afternoons build (ffmpeg_4:SVN-r23788-1_i386) removed libfaad-dev from the Dependencies (nice to see fewer external libraries needed - removed the --enable-libfaad option from ffmpeg ./configure). Not needed any more because FFmpeg's native AAC decoder now supports all features of AAC.

None of the winff presets I tried would work, main reason appeared to be the b in kb no longer recognised, edited a few presets to k and they were fine, convert to 3gp needed ffmpeg preset.
